Mercedes' George Russell headed McLaren's Lando Norris in Friday practice at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Russell was 0.028 seconds faster than Norris, with the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli 0.288secs slower than his team-mate in third place.
Williams' Alex Albon and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso were fourth and fifth, ahead of the second McLaren of championship leader Oscar Piastri.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton was eighth fastest, behind Williams' Carlos Sainz and one place ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, the closest challenger to the leading McLaren drivers in the championship.
Hamilton's team-mate Charles Leclerc missed the second session after a crash midway through the first.

It's been a terrible triple-header for Mercedes and they really lost a lot of points - and confidence for Kimi Antonelli. He's a rookie and he's come into the season all guns blazing and thinking, yes, I'm going to nail this.
He got pole in Miami for the sprint race and ever since that point, it's gone down hill. And he needs to re-establish his confidence in the team, and it's really hard to react when you're in the middle of a triple-header.
So hopefully the week before Canada, and the week after, will just give him some breathing space, some time with the team - not as pressurised - to think what's going on, what I can change, what do I need to address here, and get himself back on track.
'I don’t expect it to be easy'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 13 June

McLaren's Lando Norris spoke to BBC Sport's Andrew Benson on his season so far: "Of
course it has been a difficult season, because we are fighting for the
championship. I’ve got a strong teammate, we’ve got strong competitors, racing
the best in the world.
"I don’t expect it to be easy but I’ve had a few setbacks
along the way, more than I would have liked, some difficulties but it has been a
successful season, two wins, plenty of podiums and strong races, I say it has
been successful.
"Has it been the perfect or dream start? Maybe not but it has
been a start that is needed in order to fight for the championship, that’s
consistency, strong results, a win now and again, that’s what I managed to do,
not perfect but something I'm still happy with."
And another update on the new McLaren front suspension. Only Lando Norris is using it in this session, as was the case in the first session. A decision will be made after this session whether to continue with it into Saturday.
